There’s no movie for Loveboat Reunion, but there should be. Abigail Hing Wen has done it again and more. I had hoped for a continuation of Ever Wong and Rick Woo’s story, but I’m glad we get the evolution of Sophie Ha and Xavier Yeh instead. Summer is over and everyone is changing with the season. Sophie wants nothing more than to put her messy past with Xavier behind and start over at Dartmouth free of distractions from men. Xavier wants nothing more than to get his hands on the trust fund his Ma left behind for him when he turns 18 and be free from Ba forever.  But nothing goes anyone’s way. Sophie finds her summer distractions have caused her to be waitlisted for Professor Horvath’s AI class and Xavier finds his Ba is still in control of his trust fund and he must repeat his senior year of high school and graduate if he wishes to get his hands on it.  The tornado of Sophie Ha becomes the tornado of Sophie and Xavier when Sophie finds out Xavier has the family connection in Taipei to the one person she could interview for her AI project to get into Professor Horvath’s class. Bingo! Loveboat reunion is born.  For once, not a lot of loving stood out to me. There was one big party on the private jet that did stand out as the Asian American kind of party and it went way out of hand. It makes me sad to think about how out of hand it went, but it was another event that pushed Sophie and Xavier closer together. I like that they learned to be good friends to each other, standing up for one another in critical moments when it was needed the most, which helped to highlight why they would make good romantic partners for each other as well.  The severity of how Ba treated Xavier did stand out to me. I thought Wen captured the Asian male’s psyche accurately. Now Xavier is an artist, so that may be why, but the kind of burning anger he felt towards his Ba was realistic.  Truly, it was great to see Sophie going after her dreams in...
